The Australia guide

What works in Australia, and what doesn't

Networks, the 000 rule, GST-inclusive prices and kids watches in Australia.

Australia's 3G networks are switched off: TPG/Vodafone at the end of 2023 / early 2024, Telstra and Optus from October 28, 2024. Watches must support 4G with VoLTE, including emergency calls to 000.

    Carriers and watch plans

Telstra ($8/month) and Optus ($5/month) let your watch share your number. For a kid's Apple Watch with its own number, Telstra's $20 Watch Plan is the only option.

    • Telstra, Telstra One Number (shares your phone number and plan): $8/month on Basic or higher Upfront mobile plans (min cost $82/month with Basic). Apple, Samsung, Pixel cellular watches. (Verified) telstra.com.au
    • Telstra, Telstra Watch Plan (own number): $20/month, calls, texts and 2GB; min cost $94/month with Basic. Apple Watch only, via Apple Watch For Your Kids; the only AU carrier offering the kids setup. (Verified) telstra.com.au · telstra.com.au
    • Optus, Number Share: $5/month; one wearable per plan. Apple Watch; Samsung Galaxy Watch (Watch / Active 2 / Watch4 Classic or later); Pixel Watch 1-4 LTE. Deactivates if you switch to Prepaid. (Verified) optus.com.au · optus.com.au
    • Vodafone, NumberSync: Price not verified (terms page shows no fee); no roaming on the watch. Compatible smartwatches on eligible plans. (Not verified) vodafone.com.au

Calls to 000: the rule that decides

Since October 28, 2024, Australian carriers must identify and block devices that can't call Triple Zero (000). Optus says devices need 4G 700 MHz and VoLTE. A "4G" label on a cheap import is not enough.

        How this database is built

Most models are verified against an official manufacturer page or launch announcement; models that exist only at retailers or are press-sourced are explicitly marked on their card. Coverage: every qualifying model from the csmobiles catalog, after documented exclusions (accessories, rings, non-smart watches and more). The full source list, by brand, is below.
