Dual-frequency GPS on a smartwatch: does it matter?
Short answer: It can. A watch with dual-frequency (dual-band) GNSS listens to satellites on two frequencies, which usually gives a more accurate track in tall-building areas, tree cover and canyons. If you mostly run in open areas, the difference is smaller. It can use more battery.

What it does
GNSS is the general term for satellite positioning (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDou and others). Most watches use one frequency band. Dual-band watches also use a second, which helps the watch correct for signal reflections off buildings and terrain.
When you will notice it
- Running or cycling between tall buildings
- Trails with heavy tree cover
- Races where distance accuracy matters
- Mountain and canyon routes
When you may not
- Open parks, tracks and roads with clear sky
- Walking and casual daily use
The tradeoff
Dual-band tracking uses more power than single-band. Makers often offer a mode that switches back to save battery. Check the model's battery notes. Maps on the watch are a separate feature from satellite accuracy.
