Sleep and recovery features on smartwatches

Short answer: 128 models in our catalog list at least one of three recovery-related sensors or scores: heart rate variability (HRV), skin temperature and a readiness score. 69 list both HRV and temperature, and 45 list a readiness score. The catalog has no field for sleep stages or sleep scores, so this page does not rank watches by sleep tracking.

Last verified September 26, 2026.

What these terms mean

HRV is the variation in time between heartbeats, which some watches record and use in their own scores. Skin temperature is a sensor reading at the wrist. A readiness score is a number a maker calculates from several inputs to describe how recovered you are. How a maker calculates it is its own method, and a score from one brand cannot be compared with another. These are wellness features and not medical measurements.

What to check before relying on these

Does the watch need to be worn all night, and does its battery allow that with daily charging? Does the score need a subscription, see subscriptions explained? Does the app give you the raw numbers or only a score? Is the watch comfortable on a small case size, see sizes by brand? A watch worn at night needs a light case and a soft strap.

What these features cannot do

They do not diagnose anything, and a single night is not a trend. If you have concerns about your sleep or health, talk to a professional, and do not rely on a watch score.

Before you buy
