Smartwatch payment wallets compared
Short answer: 67 models in our catalog list a contactless payment wallet. Garmin Pay is listed on 27 models, Google Wallet on 14, Samsung Wallet on 12, Apple Pay on 9 and Fitbit Pay on 4. A wallet on the watch also needs your bank, your country and your phone to support it.

Why the wallet is tied to the phone
Apple Pay on a watch needs an iPhone. Samsung Wallet is built for Samsung phones. Google Wallet runs on Wear OS and needs an Android phone. Garmin Pay and Fitbit Pay work with their own apps and with both phone types, but only with banks that support them. This is the first filter, before the watch itself. See phone compatibility.

What to check before relying on it
Does your bank support the wallet in your country? Does paying need the phone nearby? What happens if the watch battery dies at the till? Does the watch need a plan for the wallet to set up? See NFC payment smartwatches and do smartwatches need a data plan.
Safety
Set a watch passcode, enable the lock when the watch is taken off and know how to remove cards remotely from the phone app. Bank support and rules differ by country, so read your bank's own guidance.
How to pick a wallet
Start with your phone. An iPhone user will look at Apple Pay, an Android user at Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet depending on the phone. If you use a Garmin or Fitbit watch with either phone, check the maker's bank list first. Then check that the watch itself lists the wallet, because the same brand can sell models with and without it. Finally test one small payment in a shop before you rely on it for a commute.
Before you buy
Check the maker's current details and your bank's list of supported devices. See our methodology.
